 Analysis
An away win at Old Trafford in the same week as an away win at White Hart Lane was always going to be a bit much to ask for, wasn't it?

The fact that United have been some way short of their previous high standards this season, didn't stop the way West Ham let the Red Devils play their own game, at their own pace, pretty much however they wanted.

I wrote before the game about the importance of our midfield dominating a real area of weakness in the Champions' side. Well, we didn't.

The absence of Mohamed Diamé from the central trio allowed Jones, Cleverley & Rooney all the time and space they needed to dictate a game that West Ham were never really in. Those three United midfielders - one of which is a striker, and one of which is a centre half, let's not forget - completed 189 passes between them, with a fantastic completion rate of 91%.

The image below shows what I believe is the key to our defeat. We attempted 22 tackles on Saturday afternoon, and were successful with just 7 of them. This is an astonishingly poor return, and this lack of effective pressure on the ball was, for me, the main reason behind our defeat.

The decision to play Diamé on the right of midfield is one I feel like I write about before and after every single game, but it was an issue again at the weekend.

I've already mentioned our lack of bite in the middle of the park against a makeshift United midfield - something Diamé would surely have helped prevent - but it wasn't just the Senegal captains tenacity that was missing.

By playing Diamé on the right, we also lost two of the more important weapons in our arsenal. Firstly, Diamé's ability to pick up the ball and run. These surging runs from midfield were a hallmark of our success last season, and would often see the team dragged higher up the pitch as a result. With Mo on the flank, we often lack the energy to get up the field and put any sustained pressure on the opposition.

The second mode of attack we miss out on with Diamé on the wings, is the ability to create chances from out wide. Throughout this Premier League season, Mo has attempted 32 crosses, and has found a team mate just 6 times. He makes a successful cross just 0.4 times per game.

This really isn't one of his skills, and this was again demonstrated on Saturday. The image below shows Diamé's attempted crosses.

The final person I'd like to focus on is Ravel Morrison.

Saturday saw the young midfielder return to Old Trafford for the first time since he joined us back in January 2011.

Unfortunately for Ravel, he won't have had the impact or result that he wanted, but his performance was still of a pretty high standard.

He completed 90% of his 40 passes, made one successful tackle, and completed 2 out of three attempted take ons (successfully tricking his way past England internationals Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney).

Ravel worked very hard, and was a small highlight on an otherwise gloomy afternoon for West Ham. The image below shows his heat map, highlighting how he got himself involved all over the pitch, on a day that must have meant a lot to the Mancunian.

There were other things I could've focussed on - such as the unexpected decision to hand Adrian his Premier League debut at the expense of last weekends man of the match, Jussi Jaaskelainen. Or the decision to go to 4-4-2 without any wide players for the second time this season.

But for me, we lost the game in the middle of the park. And that isn't good enough.

Manchester United vs West Ham United

Analysis
I think it's safe to say that most West Ham fans are looking forward to this game a little more now than they were on Wednesday morning.

Whilst we might usually expect a tough game with little to show in terms of points from a visit to Old Trafford, the Capital One Cup quarter final victory over Tottenham Hotspur in midweek has seen a surge of optimism come back to most Hammers.

Manchester United also progressed through to the semi finals on that night, but it seems that now could be a good time to face United. Okay, so they've now won their last three games on the spin having recorded back to back home league losses against Everton and Newcastle, but they certainly haven't been at their best recently.

And the champions, like ourselves, have a number of key players missing. It's possible that Wayne Rooney may feature, but the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie are definite absentees.

Whilst both sides have players missing, one area that West Ham are far better stocked than the Red Devils is in the middle of the park. The expected midfield triumvirate of Mark Noble, Mohamed Diamé and Ravel Morrison are ably backed up by the trio of Jack Collison, Matthew Taylor and Alou Diarra, who showed on Wednesday that they have the capability to step in if required.

On the other side, United have just Tom Cleverley and Ryan Giggs fit as recognised central midfielders - although Phil Jones could well step into the middle of the park again.

This area is the key.

After last weeks bore draw with Sunderland, I wrote about the importance of Mo Diamé to the middle of the park. He attempted 11 take ons last weekend, continuously picking up the ball and driving at the heart of the opposition. This style of play could be crucial on Saturday, as the core of United's midfield is undoubtedly their weakest area.

The table below shows a breakdown of key information for the main central midfielders used by United this season. As you can see all of them are more than able to keep the ball - Ryan Giggs posts the lowest pass completion rate with 81%. However, there are obvious areas in which they struggle. Only Jones (who has also played in defence on a number of occasions) and Shinji Kagawa have a tackle success rate of more than 50%. The absent Michael Carrick is the only one to have created more than a chance per game for team mates, and Tom Cleverley's goal last weekend is the first time any of the six have managed a league goal this season.

This is a very ordinary Manchester United midfield, and an area that West Ham must look to expose, and attack.

Despite possessing a rather ordinary midfield, United are more than capable of hurting any team they come up against. West Ham will hope that Wayne Rooney will sit this one out alongside Robin van Persie, but that's not to suggest there aren't dangermen in their side.

Danny Welbeck bagged a brace last week, and I hope it's him who lines up against us tomorrow. Although he has quadrupled his goal tally from last season, the England forward isn't a prolific forward. Since the start of last season, Welbeck has made 37 Premier League appearances, scoring 5 goals (four of those came in two games, so he's failed to score in 34 of his last 37 appearances). In that time, he has attempted 1.1 shots per game, and has a conversion rate of 13%.

Compare this to the other striking option, Javier Hernandez.

Chicarito has played in 30 Premier League games since the start of last season, and scored 11 goals - particularly impressive when you consider that he started just 12 of those game. He takes slightly more shots per game than Welbeck (1.4), but his conversion rate is twice as good, sitting at 26%.

The image below shows the goals that Hernandez scored last season. As you can see, all of them came from within the penalty box. If the Mexican has a glimpse of a chance in the box, he usually takes it.

As we saw at White Hart Lane in midweek, West Ham are capable of taking the game to big teams away from home. The chances are, we won't get any points from this game - that's what the bookmakers are saying, anyway - so why not go for it? Why not attack? Let's expose Manchester United for what they are, a team in decline.

Cup wins are great, and the mood has certainly been lifted around the place. But we need points. When better to start than now?

 Analysis
So that must win game we had? Yeah, we didn't win it. And we didn't even play well.

With our recent poor form, and tough fixtures coming up, this was seen as a rare opportunity to take three points and alleviate a little pressure on ourselves, whilst piling it on a side that are really struggling for form themselves.

And in such a big, important home game, it speaks volumes that our highest rated played (Squawka Performance Scores) was our goalkeeper.

Jussi Jaaskelainen stopped us from losing to the leagues bottom side on Saturday. Not only did he make an impressive six saves to keep the Mackems at bay, but he also claimed the ball successfully seven times, punching just the once. This was a real return to form for Jussi after criticism in the past month or so.

(There has been a change to post match reports, so you can find a detailed breakdown of Jaaskelainen's distribution vs Vito Mannone's below).

The image below shows the saves Jussi made on Saturday afternoon.

http://epl.squawka.com/west-ham-united-vs-sunderland/

The only other player I want to focus on is Mohamed Diamé.

It was something of a surprise to see Diamé play the more advanced midfield role ahead of Ravel Morrison, but the Senegel captain had a very good game back in the middle of the park.

Mo posted an impressive 80% pass completion rate, won two tackles (50% success) created an opportunity for a team mate, and had three separate pops at goal.

But what was great to see was his driving at the opposition. When Diamé plays wide, we lose out on his brute force and ball carrying abilities. Against Sunderland, he regularly picked up the ball and ran with it.

In fact, he attempted 11 take ons on Saturday, winning 7 of them. The entire team attempted 27 between them, meaning Diamé was responsible for just over 40% of the attempted take ons for the whole West Ham side, and 43% of the total successful attempts (16).

To demonstrate the difference that Diamé displayed in this game to the rest of the season so far, you just need to look at his average take ons for the season. So far, he's attempted 4.5 per game, and has been successful with 2.2 per game. That means he made more than three times as many successful take ons against Sunderland than his season average so far.

A very disappointing result, and a very disappointing performance.

Oh well. At least we've got some easy games coming up...
