Analysis
Well, that was rubbish wasn't it? Another dead rubber game that our players didn't really seem to care about. There wasn't a great deal to be pleased with, to be honest.

Other than James Collins and Jussi Jaaskelainen I can't really think of anyone else putting in anything better than a poor performance. Collins had an exceptional game, not that we should expect anything less given the high standard he has set throughout the season.

However, looking at his heat map gives an indication of how the midfield performed yesterday. Collins had a very high number of touches in and around the West Ham box. This could be indicative of the anonymous performances of the defensive midfielders.

Indeed, Diamé's removal at half time also goes to show just how ineffective the midfield pairing had been.

Another indication of the poor midfield performance can be seen in the distribution of Everton shots.

Throughout the season, a cornerstone of West Ham's success has been our ability to restrict the opposition to long range shots. Yesterday, however, over 60% of the Toffee's attempts came from inside the box (not that it made much of a difference with Mirallas scoring two from outside!).

In terms of attacking play... well, there wasn't really any.

A reason for this could be the incredibly flat performance from the midfield. West Ham played with an almost flat six (Demel, Collison, Nolan, O'Neil, Diamé, O'Brien) in midfield for large portions of the game, with just Jarvis breaking out of the middle.

The image below shows the average positions for the starting XI. As you can see, the midfield and fullbacks remained in an almost entirely flat line. A particular disappointment was the lack of support from Kevin Nolan and Mo Diamé to Andy Carroll. It was almost like watching us earlier in the season when Carlton Cole was isolated and the midfield lacked the drive to support the front man.

On the rare occasions that we did manage to venture into the Everton third, our usual attacking weapon let us down.

On many occasions this season our main attacking outlet has been Matt Jarvis down the left flank, and our overall crossing ability throughout the team. Well, on Sunday, just 2 of our crosses reached their mark.

The image below shows the attempted crosses. As you can see, only two managed to hit a team mate, and only one of those led directly to an attempt on goal.

(Red = Unsuccessful; Green = Successful; Yellow = Led to Goalscoring Opportunity)

All in all then, a poor performance, a poor result, and a disappointing end to our away fixtures this season.

A win against Reading on the final day will ensure our place in the top half, but if the players serve up another performance like this one, that seems a little unlikely.

The final word from me is to say a big congratulations to Wigan Athletic. It's always nice to have an underdog win something, and the Latics certainly did that.

And when they get relegated tomorrow night, can we have a punt on that McManaman?
