West Ham United vs Manchester United

Analysis

So our recent good form appears to be over after two consecutive defeats. And with the reigning champions rolling into town this weekend, it'd be sensible to expect the worst.

However, Manchester United haven't exactly been in the best of form this season, and we've recently recaptured our home form with three home wins on the bounce.

So maybe we should be a little optimistic?

Danger Man

Though Manchester United have been below par under David Moyes so far, they still possess and array of talents who West Ham should be mindful of.

Robin van Persie has made a nuisance of himself against West Ham in the recent years, Adnan Januzaj grabbed a goal in the opposite fixture back in December, as did Danny Welbeck & Ashley Young, and Juan Mata is a challenge for any side to deal with.

But the main man for United this season has been Wayne Rooney.

We at West Ham should be all too aware of Rooney's abilities already, with the forward scoring (9) or creating (4) 13 goals in his 15 career appearances against the Hammers.

The England striker has been a talisman for his club this season, leading both their scoring and assist charts in the Premier League. In his 24 league appearances this season, Rooney has bagged himself 11 goals, and put a further 10 on a plate for his team mates. In fact, he's been such a force this season that he either creates a chance or has a shot on goal once every 18 minutes.

How Do You Stop Them?

The key to stopping United this season seems clear: force them wide.

United have struggled with creating goals from wide positions on a number of occasions this season, with many sides dealing with their relentless crossing with relative ease.

To date, United have put in more crosses (28) per game than any other team in the league, but have relatively few assists from their widemen and fullbacks. Of those players, only Patrice Evra (3), Antonio Valencia (2), Rafael (2) and Adnan Januzaj (1) have managed league assists this season.

And adding Luis Nani and Ashley Young to that group doesn't improve their accuracy much either. Between them, the six players have attempted 436 crosses this season, with just 91 reaching a team mate.

In recent times, both Fulham and Stoke City have managed impressive results against Manchester United by adopting a similar approach. By congesting the middle of the park, United are unable to get players like Rooney and Mata involved in dangerous areas, so end up going wide more regularly than they would like.

The image below shows the average positions of both the Fulham and Stoke XI's in their performances against United. You can see that Fulham played a very congested, tight game, with a number of bodies in the middle of the park. Stoke played a slightly more expansive game than Fulham (as would be expected from a home team), but still kept Glenn Whelan (#6) and Charlie Adam (#16) deep in the middle of the park, whilst their centre halves and right fullback stayed very deep.

You'll also notice that Stoke's left side was an important attacking outlet against United with Erik Pieters (#3) playing almost as a winger alongside Marko Arnautovic (#10). This option becomes viable against United when they play Juan Mata on the right flank. The Spaniard is not a traditional winger, often drifting into the middle of the park.

Against Stoke, Whelan and Adam were in the space that Mata wanted to occupy, meaning he struggled to be an effective creative force. He also left Pieters unoccupied for large portions of the game, allowing the Dutch fullback to press high up the pitch.

Weakest Link

United's weakest area this season has been abundantly clear. For a side with such success over recent times, their central midfield is woefully inadequate. Other than defensive midfielder Michael Carrick, all United's central midfielders have struggled to find form this season.

In terms of creativity, it has been appalling. Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini and Ryan Giggs have shared a paltry two goals this season, and have failed to register a single assist.

Only Giggs averages more than one chance created per 90 minutes, and the foursome have only managed to muster 52 shots between them - at a rate of one shot every 66.6 minutes.

Manchester United are never an easy side to take on. After a good midweek result, they may just be buoyed into a positive performance against West Ham on Saturday evening. But if there was ever an opportunity to beat the Red Devils, this was it.

 Analysis 

In arguably our most important game of the season so far, West Ham came through with flying colours. A three nil win against a club in a very similar position to us was exactly what the doctor ordered. 

West Ham were excellent throughout. Yes, it would've been nicer to get that all important second goal a bit earlier. Yes, the second half was incredibly nerve racking. But the truth is, every one of our players put a real performance in.

Stewart Downing has (rightly) been named as man of the match. Kevin Nolan looked more like himself in his proper position. Modibo Maiga put in his best performance of the season. Mark Noble easily outperformed his former midfield partner Scott Parker.

But I want to concentrate on the performances of three players in particular.

Firstly, the return of George McCartney.

The former Northern Ireland fullback's return to the first team was not expected to be in this game, particularly at the expense of the ever reliable Joey O'Brien. But the decision to bring McCartney into the side proved a masterstroke.

McCartney completed 85% of his passes, won 2 headed duels, made 4 clearances, and even managed to successful take on and beat Elsad Zverotic.

The balance of having a left footed fullback worked wonders for the side, and McCartney showed that his injury problems haven't affected his engine. His heat map below shows how heavily involved he was in the game, up and down the left flank.

The second player I want to focus on is Mohamed Diamé.

The Senegal midfielder was one of our stand out performers last season, but has struggled this term, in and out of the side, and rarely playing in his preferred central position. On Saturday though, Sam Allardyce returned Diamé to his favoured position, and reaped the rewards.

Mo completed 88% of his passes, successfully took on a defender 4 out of 6 times, won 83% of his 6 attempted tackles, and even got the (fortunate) goal that set us on our way. His performance was back to what we saw last season, and he was absolutely everywhere - as shown by his heat map below.

 The final performance I wanted to look at was Ravel Morrison's cameo.

It was a little bit of a shock to see the England under 21 starlet on the bench against Fulham, but it seems Sam Allardyce made the right decision. Dropping Ravel to the bench allowed for Mohamed Diamé to return to the middle of the park, and also meant that Morrison came on with 15 minutes to go against some pretty tired Fulham legs.

And he was exceptional.

He completed 100% of his passes, made one successful tackle, and attempted 5 take ons, with an 80% success rate. His through ball to set Stewart Downing free for Carlton Cole's goal was absolutely wonderful, but it was his assist for Joe Cole's goal in the closing minutes that will stand out.

Below is the goal map for the third goal. After a little bit of keep ball on the half way line, Ravel picked up the ball in the centre circle (I've circled where he picked up the ball in red). He then ran. He went by Bryan Ruiz and Elsad Zverotic as if they weren't there, and had the presence of mind to roll the ball into the path of Joe Cole to smash home a wonderful third.

It was an outstanding assist, and just a glimpse of what this young man is capable of.

So we play Palace tomorrow. The elation of a victorious London derby could be doubled if we can get a result tomorrow night.

If we perform as we did on Saturday, I've no doubt that we'll be storming up the table again.

Analysis

After a miserable couple of performances, this game is huge. I won't say it's a 'must' win, but we certainly can't afford to lose this.

Fulham are a side that have lost their last four Premier League games, conceding 11 goals on the way. The fact is, Fulham will give you opportunities to score against them.

In those last four games, they have conceded a massive 83 shots on their goal. Dutch international goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has made an average of 3.25 saves per game in those matches, and picked the ball out of his net on a fair few occasions.

If you take a look at the goals Fulham have conceded recently, you'll notice a bit of a pattern.

All of the goals they've conceded in the past four games have been from within the penalty area. This suggests they are allowing their opponents the opportunity to create goal scoring opportunities in the most dangerous areas. Let's hope that, should such opportunities arise on Saturday, that we have the players to take them.

Against Chelsea last weekend, a real issue for West Ham was that we had no time on the ball. Our passing was rushed, and their forwards made life difficult for us - Oscar, for example, attempted 8 tackles, winning 6, displaying just what a hard working performance Chelsea put in against us.

Fulham though, have the opposite problem. Whilst the attacking talents of Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Bent and Bryan Ruiz are widely renowned, their workrate and defensive capabilities often leave a lot to be desired.

Look at Bryan Ruiz's heat map from last weekends defeat to Swansea City.

You can clearly see that he struggled to get involved in the game, floating in off his designated right flank, but providing no real impact. This heat map could easily be Berbatov or Bent's, such was the workrate among the Fulham attack.

But this lack of energy isn't just typical of the forwards. Fulham have one of the oldest squads in the league, and it could be that this has caught up with them a little this season.

The image below shows the whole side's attempted tackles against Swansea. You'll see that there were just four attempted tackles in in the Swans half, suggesting that defenders and deep lying midfielders had the opportunity to pick a pass and take their time on the ball.

But the real area of concern for Martin Jol should be the centre of midfield. I've put a big red circle on the pitch view below, to show the area of worry. Fulham managed to win 0 tackles, and attempted just 2 in the centre of their own half, instead allowing the opposition to play the ball around outside their penalty area, in the most dangerous area of the field.

Should they offer up a similarly lack lustre effort against West Ham, the likes of Mark Noble, Ravel Morrison and Stewart Downing should have a field day.

That said, this Fulham side do possess quality. We've seen over the years just how lethal Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov can be given the right service.

The image below displays their goalscoring records. Between them, they've netted 110 Premier League goals since 2009, with a conversion rate of 19%.

However, what is also clear, is that neither player is at the peak of their powers. Berbatov's best conversion rate came three seasons ago, when he made just 5 league starts for Manchester United. Although Bent's best conversion rate has actually been this season, he's attempting significantly less shots on goal per game - this is the first team since 2009 he's been attempted less than one shot per game.

There are worse teams we could come up against at this moment than Fulham though. The Cottagers have had a (marginally) poorer start to the season than us, and Martin Jol is increasingly under the microscope.

Our home form may have been patchy - okay, awful - this season, but we are facing a Fulham side that haven't won a Premier League game at the Boleyn in their last 8 attempts. In fact, their last victory over us on our own turf came in an FA cup game back in February 2004.

We also have a couple of players who have pretty good histories against Fulham. Carlton Cole has scored more goals against Fulham than any other club in his career, and has 6 in his last 5 against them. Kevin Nolan also has five career goals against them, and bagged in both games against Fulham for the Hammers last season.

We may be at a low ebb, but let's think of these positives, and stay optimistic!
