Everton vs West Ham United

Analysis
It feels like far longer than a fortnight, but finally the Premier League is back after the international break.

Both West Ham and this weekend's opposition, Everton, have fallen victim to a host of injuries to key players over the past two weeks - so much so, that Saturday's game will be something of a who's who of missing players.

Key Player
Whilst West Ham are almost likely to be without key players Stewart Downing, Diafra Sakho, Winston Reid and Alex Song, Everton themselves have an injury list that currently runs to 11 players potentially out of this game.

Fortunately for the Toffees though, the one man West Ham would have hoped to miss the game is fit and healthy. We all remember what Romelu Lukaku did to us in his two appearances against the Hammers last year, but I'll bring it up again just for the sake of being a sadist.

Across two games, the Belgian played just 77 minutes against West Ham, but managed 6 shots, 6 attempted take ons, and scored two decisive goals after the 80 minute mark.

The two images below show Lukaku's heat maps from those two games. Left is the home 3-2 defeat, and right is the away 1-0 loss. You can see in both that Lukaku got heavily involved in both games despite only have short cameos from the bench.

How do you stop Everton?
Everton may have had a slightly rocky start to the season, but in the last couple of months they have been getting back to their best, particularly at Goodison Park. As we know from experience, Goodison is not an easy place to visit, and not many teams come away with anything to show for their efforts.

Having said that, in their last home game, Everton could only manage a goalless draw with Swansea City.

People might initially think that there is little point in West Ham looking to Swansea's result for inspiration, giving the differing styles of play the two sides have. We aren't really a long ball side (particularly this season), but Swansea have been championed as the tika-taka kings of Britain.

However, when you actually look at that game, you'll notice that the Swans had a pass completion rate of just 78%, and managed just 40% possession. What Swansea actually did, is defend aggressively - something West Ham are more than capable of!

During the game, Swansea made 42 clearances, 18 interceptions, blocked 5 shots, and - perhaps most importantly - put in 47 tackles.

Under Roberto Martinez, Everton have become known for their slick passing style, running with the ball, and generally being easy on the eye. Any team that likes to knock the ball about struggle when bodies are being flung left right and centre.

The image below shows Swansea's attempted tackles. They only won 34% of their tackles, but that doesn't really matter. It's about disrupting play, closing down ball players, committing fouls if necessary.

http://epl.squawka.com/everton-vs-swansea-city/

And Swansea aren't the only team to adopt this approach to find success at Goodison. Since the start of last season, Everton have played 24 home games, winning 14, drawing 5 and losing 5.

What is interesting, is that when Everton fail to win, the number of tackles put in by the opposition is greater than when the Toffees do win. The chart below shows the average number of tackles by the opposition team by Everton result.

As you can see, when Everton win at home, the opposition attempt an average of 35 tackles per game, compared to 43 for an away victory. Of course, putting in tackles doesn't mean you're going to come away from Goodison with anything other than a disappointing drive home, but what it does suggest is that the Toffees struggle when they aren't afforded time on the ball.

Weakness
Picking a weakness for Everton is pretty difficult. Martinez's side are a well oiled machine, with each member knowing his job inside out, and executing it very well. What does have the potential to weaken them though, is an injury list as long as your arm.

Lots of their injured players are expected to have late fitness tests, and many will be fit for the game, but the potential absences of Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines and Bryan Oviedo means the only fit, experienced fullback in the squad is veteran Tony Hibbert.

Should Coleman and Baines miss out, the Everton side will be weakened considerably. The flying fullbacks have created 36 chances, collected 7 assists, and scored 4 goals in the Premier League this season. And on top of that, they've also made 89 defensive actions.

Hibbert isn't the worst back up in the world, with 325 Everton games under his belt, and capable of filling in at both right and left fullback. However, he is a significant step down in quality from the two regulars, and has only managed 9 league games since the start of the 2012/13 season.

Conclusion
Everton away is a tough nut to crack at the best of times, but when you're missing a number of your best players, the task gets significantly harder.

The saving grace for West Ham may be that Everton are likely to be missing a least a few of their own key men. Also, the fact that defending with your life is a key part of getting something from Goodison could mean our gameplan may still have the right men to be effective.

West Ham United vs Everton

Analysis
Despite what many West Ham fans would have you believe this week, Everton are not unbeatable. There is a certain doom and gloom feeling around E13 at the moment. Three games without a goal can do that to a fanbase.

But, in my opinion, the negativity is not entirely justified. We are still a good side. We still have good players. I don't think I can remember a better defensive unit for the Hammers since I began supporting the club, and that is something we should be proud of. The attacking unit isn't performing to the best of its abilities at the moment, but all it will take is a fluke goal and the confidence will come flooding back.

Maybe I'm being foolish, but I think we can beat Everton.

Despite the performance and result against Stoke, we are a very tough team to play at home. Our record last season speaks for itself. The Toffees, meanwhile, haven't won an away game in the Premier League since the 2nd of January against Newcastle - that makes it 10 without victory for them.

This could be a good opportunity to play Everton. They are still adapting to Martinez's favoured tippy-tappy-tika-taka approach, and they are vulnerable. Okay, so the back four of Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin & Leighton Baines have been excellent for quite some time now. But there is a weak link.

I rate Tim Howard, but he has mistakes in him. Last season, he made 5 mistakes leading to shots on goal - four of which went in. Only last week he suffered a lapse in confidence with the ball at his feet, allowing Chelsea in to a golden opportunity (what a tackle by Gareth Barry, by the way!).

The image below shows defensive mistakes made by Everton's back five last season. As you can see, Howard is the obvious weaklink, although Jagielka is also prone to the odd slip up too.

I'm not a massive fan of Martinez. I don't really understand how a manager who was relegated just 4 months ago has found himself in the hotseat at one of the biggest clubs in the country. That said, the Spaniard should be applauded for his use of Ross Barkley.

We've been promised for a few years now that the young midfielder would be the next big thing, but his opportunities under David Moyes had been restricted. Martinez though, has made Barkley his main man - and he is reaping the rewards.

Barkley has been one of the stand out performers of the season so far, even managing an England cap just a few weeks ago. In 4 appearances so far this season, he's successfully beaten his man 19 time out of 26 attempts.

His goalscoring display against Norwich City on the opening day of the season was spectacular. Barkley completed 96% of his 51 passes, won three out of three tackles, beat his man 4 out of 5 times, created a goalscoring chance for a team mate, and grabbed one himself. It was an almost perfect all round midfield performance.

However, the issue with putting so much faith into such a young player is that the consistency is not always there. In last weekend's victory over Chelsea, Barkley was successful with just 69% of his passes, giving the ball away 9 times.

The game was also the first time Barkley had less than 50 touches of the ball in a game this season. It could be suggested that starving Barkley of the ball causes him to be less patient in possession, thus giving the ball away with more regularity.

The image below shows Barkley's touches and pass accuracy in each game so far. The more touches he has, the more accurate his passing.

Like us, Everton have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal this season. Despite a promising start to life in England, Nikica Jelavic has been a bit of a flop for Everton. Unfortunately for West Ham though, this could be the week that Romelu Lukaku makes his Toffees debut.

The young Belgian was, reportedly, courted by West Ham all summer, but opted to ply his trade in the blue of Everton. It seems all too typical that he'd make his debut against us, having supposedly spurned our advances.

Lukaku is dangerous. During his loan at West Brom last season, he scored 17 Premier League goals, and created 36 chances for his team mates. If Lukaku hits the ground running for Everton this weekend, West Ham's excellent defence may have their hardest challenge of the season.

The image below shows Lukaku's shots on goal last season. In total, he shot at goal 79 times in his 35 appearances. He hit the target 66% of the time (52). He scored with 22% of his shots, and 33% of his shots on target. He really is a deadly finisher.

Sam Alladryce has got some difficult decisions to make this week. Do we bring Joey O'Brien to right back to help defend against the rampaging Leighton Baines? Does Mark Noble spend the game sitting on Ross Barkley, or should he continue to press forward as he has done in recent weeks? Does Modibo Maiga deserve to continue up front, or does Ricardo Vaz Te offer the bigger goal threat?

Big choices for Big Sam.

Getting those decisions right could give us a very happy weekend, and finally lift that grey cloud off of the Boleyn.

Analysis

West Brom are an interesting team. They started the season incredibly well under former West Ham assistant manager Steve Clarke, and, although their early season level has dropped somewhat, they continue to surprise people.

One of the key factors in their success this season, and probably the biggest difference between their season and ours, is that West Brom can boast a natural goalscorer in the form of Romelu Lukaku (and a more than able partner in Shane Long).

Lukaku seems to have a lot of the qualities that West Ham's own on loan striker Andy Carroll possesses, but has outscored the England striker by 10 so far this campaign. If West Brom are to defeat us on Saturday, there's a strong chance it'll be down to the teenage Belgian.

As Sunderland recently found out, Lukaku is a real handful. He runs at people (50 dribbles attempted in 27 games), he is strong in the air (59/128 aerial duels won) and he creates (21 chances created). The reason he's so difficult to deal with, is that he is very mobile and rarely stays in the central striking position for long.

The following images show Lukaku's performance against Sunderland a month ago. The first image (heat map just goes to show how the man simply does not stand still, popping up on both flanks, and through the centre. The second image shows his attempts on goal against Sunderland. This image bears out what the first one tells us, that he will attack from all angles, and is capable of working the keeper from anywhere (White = Goal, Red = Off Target, Purple = Saved).

http://epl.squawka.com/west-bromwich-albion-vs-sunderland/23-02-2013/english-barclays-premier-league/matches

When West Ham went to the Black Country in December, we managed a 0-0 draw and a valuable away point. There is nothing to suggest that we can't do that again. One of the keys to our success that day was a high workrate, and not allowing the West Brom midfield to surge into the box. Indeed, 65% of shots on Jussi Jaaskelainen's goal that day were from distance.

One thing that will need to change, however, is that West Ham will need to play a more expansive, attacking game. In the away fixture, the midfield played a very narrow formation. This meant the Baggies struggled to create chances, but we offered little attacking threat of our own.

A victory on Saturday would all but see West Ham safe (and almost certainly see Sam Allardyce awarded a new contract). We've been very solid at the Boleyn this season, and I fancy us to beat anyone at home. That said, Sam will need to have a plan in place to stop the likes of Lukaku and Long tearing through us, whilst remembering to offer some kind of threat ourselves.

I have full faith in the team for this one. I'm expecting us to win, and I'm expecting us to be safe.
