Analysis
Well, that was a bit of a disappointment, wasn't it?
I don't think many of us expected to get much from Goodison Park, but nonetheless, this was a disappointing result.
Sam Allardyce set his side up with the gameplan that I wrote about last week. Sit deep and compact the midfield. If you look at the average position map below, you'll see that the system was designed to stifle Everton's creative players, forcing them to play in front of the West Ham defence.
So far, so good.
What we didn't do, however, was create anything of note of our own. Throughout February, we were able to create a few good openings, and have taken them clinically. On Saturday, we created very, very little. In fact, only four of our attempts on goal came from a direct pass by a teammate.
The image below shows our failed passes from Saturday. There are a lot of long balls out of defence, and a lot of angled passes into the box.
And this image shows our completed passes.
If you look closely, you'll see that we only actually completed two passes into the opposition box in the whole game.
As I said, I didn't expect much from this game (I thought we'd sneak a draw), so I can't be too surprised or upset.
Next up is a very important away trip to the Britannia. Should we get something from that game, we'll move a long way towards safety.
So let's hope this was just a blip.
