Analysis
Thank goodness. We needed that.

Sam Allardyce has been telling us all season that once Andy Carroll came back everything would be fine (or words to that effect). On Saturday lunchtime, Swansea learnt that the Carroll – Nolan partnership is a potentially devastating one. So let’s start with the goals, shall we?

Both goals came from both sides doing what they are type casted to do. Swansea began to pass their way up the pitch, West Ham intercepted. Two crosses, two headed passes, two goals. Simple.

The images below show how both goals mapped out. And let’s give a big hand to Mark Noble, George McCartney and Stewart Downing for the parts they played in the goals.

And, up until his unfortunate red card in the 59th minute, it really was the Andy Carroll we paid £15m for.

The big striker had 7 attempts on goal, created three chances for teammates, and bagged himself a couple of assists. But it was his aerial dominance that was the key to this performance. Carroll won 10 of his 14 aerial duels, with Chico and Ashley Williams winning just one out of seven between them. But throughout his career Carroll’s heading hasn’t just been about getting his head on it. It’s the control that is so impressive. All three of the chances he created came from his head, and, as we know, so did both of his assists.

The image below shows where Carroll had his aerial duels. As you can see, he consistently outjumped defenders where it mattered; the penalty box. Let’s hope that the FA see sense and we aren’t denied our most effective weapon for the next three matches…

The final area to mention is another battling defensive performance. Matthew Taylor followed up his 7 blocks in midweek with another four on Saturday. Kevin Nolan put in 9 tackles, winning 7 of them. James Tomkins made one of the tackles of the season to prevent Swansea grabbing a goal. And the side made a whopping 66 clearances.

Add all of that up, and you get a clean sheet. And look at Swansea’s heat map. They hardly got near the box.

A good win that was much needed. If all goes well this week, we’ll have Andy Carroll spearheading the attack against Aston Villa next weekend, and another victory in a bag.

Fingers crossed, eh?
