 Analysis
Remember that fight, spirit and desire we all championed a week ago? Yeah. What happened to that?

Before we get into the flesh of it, I think whoscored.com's match summary probably says it all. "Team showed no significant strengths". Awful. Just awful.

For me, the performance was typified by Mohamed Diamé. We know these players have ability, we've seen it. Diamé has more than most, but the application just isn't there sometimes.

On Saturday, it was non existent. Diamé was anonymous.

He made 21 touches in 62 minutes. That's about three minutes per touch. He attempted 9 passes. That's one pass every 6.9 minutes. He created no chances, had one shot on goal, and  attempted four take ons - failing them all. Okay, so he made two successful tackles, but he did very little else.

Look at his heat map. He flitted in and out of the game for an hour, offering very little for his side to build on. For a player of his undoubted quality, this was a performance that smacks of not being bothered.

But it wasn't just a lack of interest on Saturday. A lack of any kind of quality was the main difference between the two sides.

Excluding crosses, we created three chances during the game. Newcastle created 12. And this was the real difference between the teams. Newcastle possessed a level of quality and confidence on the ball that was entirely absent from this West Ham side - and not for the first time this season.

The image below details the chances created by each side. You can see the variety in their play, the way they cut through our defence at will. And look at ours. There's almost nothing there.

I said last week that a win can make a huge difference to mood, confidence and optimism. Well, not to our side, apparently. Another loss, back in the bottom three. A lack of fight.
