West Ham United vs Newcastle United

Analysis
After a very important win last weekend, we head into another crunch game.

Newcastle United have lost the last four games on the bounce, and have managed no goals in their last three Premier League games. On paper, this should be a good time to face the Toon, but we all know that what's on paper doesn't mean much when it comes for West Ham.

Newcastle have some very able individuals. Hatem Ben Arfa is one of those players who can produce match winning quality at the drop of a hat, but spends the majority of his time on the peripheries of games. Yoan Gouffran has had a good season so far, bagging six goals from the left forward position. Cheick Tiote is another player who is important for Newcastle is they are to be successful.

But for me, there are two real dangermen: Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye.

Loan signing Remy is Newcastle's top scorer this season, notching himself 10 goals in 19 appearances - a feat made all the more impressive by his fantastic chance conversion rate of 24% (10 goals, 41 shots).

The French international has proven himself to be a very capable finisher in this division since his move to Queens Park Rangers a year ago, but has been in something of a lean spell recently. He hasn't netted in his last three games, and before his two goal haul over 9-man Stoke City on Boxing Day, he went five games without a goal.

That said, the striker will pose a very real threat to West Ham's goal on Saturday. The image below shows his goals scored this season.

What you'll notice, is that Remy's goals are very clearly split down the middle. He has either scored from close range from the right hand side of the box, or coming in from the left and shooting across goal. Clearly, this suggests that Remy has been operating from the left channel and cutting inside.

This is in stark contrast to his goalscoring exploits for QPR last season (image below).

All of Remy's goals came from the right hand side of the goal, usually going across the goalkeeper. What this tells us, is that the Frenchman is capable of operating across the front line, and is dangerous from around the area, wherever he may pick up the ball.

For me, Yohan Cabaye is the outstanding midfielder in the Newcastle side.

The French international has created 29 chances for team mates in 18 appearances this season, netted five for himself, attempted 77 tackles (42% success), has made 46 interceptions, and has an impressive pass completion rate of 83%.

Cabaye is a very able ball player, averaging just over 49 passes per game this season. And when given the luxury of time and space on the ball, the midfielder is more than capable of hurting you.

In that Boxing Day game against Stoke City, Cabaye was afforded time on the ball, and he used it to full effect. Cabaye attempted 97 passes against the Potters, completing an incredible 94%. The map below shows his passes that day.

To get something out of the game on Saturday, West Ham will need to keep the ball away from Cabaye, to stop him giving it to Remy.

With reports that James Collins, Ravel Morrison and Guy Demel will give West Ham a fitness boost for the game this weekend, and Newcastle's recent poor form, there is a real possibility that we could get our first back to back victories in quite some time.

Here's to hoping.
